Why we do it

Our Story

The Jones-Kennedy Project was born from unimaginable loss, personal resilience, and the unwavering belief that healing is possible.

In 2018, the founder lost her 9-year-old cousin, Nadia Jones—her junior bride at the time—to bone cancer. Just two years later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she faced another devastating blow with the passing of her father, Bishop Sammy Kennedy, to prostate cancer. In a short span of time, the world as she knew it was shattered.

Grief consumed her, but she refused to be defined by loss. She sought answers—not just to survive but to truly understand how a person can mentally and emotionally withstand the weight of life’s hardest moments. Through deep research into social and emotional resilience, she discovered skills and practices that could help her regain stability.

Why we do it

Our Story

She didn’t just study these principles—she lived them. She wrote her way out of what felt like her own death while still living, developing mental health activities that became her lifeline. Over time, she transformed pain into purpose, realizing that the key to healing wasn’t just in surviving but in learning how to thrive.

The Jones-Kennedy Project exists because she is living proof that when you put in the work to heal, the possibilities in life become endless. Now, she is dedicated to helping others—especially students and educators—develop the same mental resilience so that no one has to navigate emotional hardship alone. Through interactive workbooks, engaging activities, and accessible resources, the JK Project is changing mentalities, one activity at a time.

Vaija Jones

My name is Vaija Jones. I am a proud graduate of West Mesquite High School. I studied at East Texas A&M University, where I pursued my passion for teaching by studying Early Childhood Education. From an early age, I knew I wanted to make a difference in the lives of young learners, and my journey through education has been guided by that calling.

Beyond the classroom, I enjoy expressing my creativity and energy through cheer and dance—two hobbies that have always brought me joy and connection with others. When I’m not assisting with cheer or dance, you can often find me shopping and exploring new styles.

One of the most important parts of my life currently is my daughter, who is truly my best friend. She inspires me every day to be the best version of myself, both as a mother and an educator. Together, we embrace life’s adventures, always learning and growing side by side.

Laquita McGowan

Laquita McGowan: A Life of Purpose and Passion
From the moment I can remember, I have always been drawn to people—their stories, their struggles, and their triumphs. My life has been a journey of learning, leading, and inspiring, shaped by faith, education, and an unwavering passion for helping others reach their full potential.
I was born with an innate desire to make a difference, and that desire led me on a path toward education and psychology. With a degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology, I developed a deep understanding of human behavior, motivation, and personal development. However, my calling extended beyond the corporate world. My heart belonged in the classroom, where I could directly impact the lives of young minds. That realization inspired me to pursue a master’s in education, equipping me with the tools to nurture and guide students toward success.
Today, I have the privilege of teaching 8th-grade English Language Arts and Reading at Inspired Vision. In my classroom, I strive to create an environment where students feel seen, heard, and empowered. My background in psychology allows me to connect with them beyond academics, helping them navigate their emotions, set goals, and develop resilience. Witnessing their growth and achievements fuels my passion and reinforces my purpose.
Beyond the classroom, I embrace my roles as a wife, mother, and youth leader at my church. These roles are not separate from my work but extensions of who I am—a mentor, a nurturer, and a guide. My faith has been the cornerstone of my journey, providing strength and wisdom as I navigate life’s challenges and joys.
Black History and Women’s Month holds a special place in my heart. It is a time to celebrate greatness, honor legacies, and recognize the perseverance and brilliance of those who came before us. I strive to instill this same appreciation in my students, encouraging them to embrace their history, find their voices, and write their own legacies.
One of my favorite quotes is from Muhammad Ali: “To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you’re not, pretend you are.” This mindset has guided me through my own struggles, reminding me that confidence and perseverance are key to overcoming obstacles. I share this wisdom with my students, urging them to believe in themselves even when the world tells them otherwise.
As I continue my journey, my mission remains clear: to inspire, educate, and uplift. Whether in the classroom, at home, or in my community, my goal is to leave a lasting impact—one that empowers others to rise, dream, and achieve beyond their wildest imagination.
